Sweet Tea

 Sweet Tea

I've recently have started drinking sweet tea again. It's been a long time. I used to drink it before I was an active member of the LDS church. Now
that I'm drinking it again I feel guilty doing so in front of my family, like I"m doing something so wrong. How could drinking sweet tea possibly be wrong in God's mind or commandments? I know the LDS church just says it's about obedience and it's okay not to question it. But really? Is that not okay to question? Has my life come down to having to justify sweet tea whether or not it pertains to the salvation of my soul or determine where I will be in the after life? Okay so I live in the here and now. That doesn't mean I live for pleasure, but it also doesn't mean I have to deprive myself from simple and non destructive things to my body and mind. Perhaps the amount of caffeine intake should be monitored and not consumed too much. I typically only drink water and orange juice, occasionally a Jamaican ginger ale.

Fresh Hair Cut

 Fresh Hair Cut

I've cut my own hair for over 20 years. Back in high school a good friend cut my hair. As I got a little older and when he wasn't available I learned to cut it myself.

But more recently I decided to try out a barber shop just to see how it would go. In my past experience going anywhere ( other than 1 or 2 times ) it turned out much worse than cutting my own hair.

Ah and I just remembered another friend who was also my neighbor (apartments) that used to cut my hair. He did a great job but we didn't live close very long.

I must of lucked out on my trial at the barber shop because I got the best barber ever!!! However it does suck that I'm going bald..but either way it was really nice to find a great barber that I will go to as long as possible.

Now I really enjoy going to get my hair cut verses dreading it. He is also knowledgeable about hair in general and recommended moisture rich shampoo and conditioner as well as rinsing the conditioner in cold water. That has helped my dandruff/dry scalp. Prior to that knowledge I tried various dandruff shampoo's and even medication from dermatologist. For me the moisturizing shampoo and conditioner works the best.

I never knew I would find such a great barber. But also thanks to my amigos for cutting hair all those other times.

Vegan Banana Oatmeal Pancakes

 Vegan Banana Oatmeal Pancakes

I got this recipe from: healthiersteps.com

I just simplified the blog and the ingredients as well as doubling them.

Ingredients: Makes about 12 pancakes

  • 2 cups  rolled oats
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • coconut oil or whatever nonstick item you have for cooking
  • maple syrup, your favorite toppings e.g., fresh fruits, nut butter or jam

Instructions
  1. Place all the ingredients in a blender, roll oats, almond milk, banana, vanilla, baking powder, salt. Process until completely smooth.
  2. Apply oil/spray/butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add batter and cook until edges are golden brown, about 2-3 minutes, flip the pancake and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Repeat until batter is all gone.
  3. Serve topped with maple syrup and fruits or whatever you'd like

It's not too late to start over again

It's not too late to start over again

It's been over a year since I've been on a real mountain bike ride. I didn't think I was going to make it back to the parking lot, but I did.

I rode the loop clockwise and realized I've been doing wrong all along. I wondered how in the world I rode it in this direction a couple of years ago! Man I must of been in some pretty good shape. Either way I'm riding it counter clockwise next time.

Moral of this story is it's never too late to start over again, especially if it's a good habit. Though it can be challenging it's usually worth the effort. In these trying times it's important to practice good habits.

It also felt as if my bike was going to buck me off every time I went over a bump, rock, or mostly roots. So it's time to either get a new bike or some tweaking. I probably just need a new bike. Maybe Santa will bring it to me.

Ok, scratch that, Santa ain't gonna bring it to me.. He's got 6 kids in my house to bring presents to.

I thought I'd post this before I went out and rode again. Well that's not the case I rode again today counter clockwise, it was still challenging but not as challenging. Oh and if you are wondering where I rode, Cochran Mill Park in Chattahoochee Hills, Ga. Happy trails and Happy Thanksgiving.

How to install ubnutu 18.04 onto an old Macbook

So I came into a handful of macbooks. Man my girls where excited (me too).
The tasks was for me to wipe the hard drives for a relative and then we could keep them.

I am not that familiar with Macs but it didn't take long to figure out how to do a DOD highest level of a disk wipe.

So now I wanted to reinstall Mac OS X. That seemed easy enough. But I was getting the temporarily unavailable warning. That led me down a rabbit whole and even a call to Mac support. Which I was told to take it to a Mac store to get an OS on it.

Well that didn't bode to well with me considering I am a Unix engineer and work with Linux mostly. Nevertheless I kept on trying. Ultimately it seemed like the macbooks I had could only have OS X Lion on them and I could buy the OS for $20 from Apple.

That doesn't seem too bad but then I would be stuck the an old version of OS X.

So I laid to for bed and I thought to myself. Why not try Ubuntu on them.

That's what I did the next day. I read some from someones sight and Ubuntu's site.

Well I sort of put them together and had to come up with my own process.

  1. My macbooks didn't have DVD ROM.
  2. Booting from USB wasn't working.

But they did have CD Roms. So I had to think outside the box a little.

The first macbook was 64 bit 4GB of ram so I opted for Ubuntu 18.04
Since I only had CD ROMs I had to use the minimal.iso

Here are some other download options. I used 16.04 32 bit on another.

I booted, held down option key, and then I had the option to choose windows or efi. I choose efi and away it went.

You can pick which flavor of Ubuntu you want. I choose lubuntu on this one to just to try it out. I plugged it into the network with a cat5 cable. Once it was booted up and had to do some special stuff to get the wifi working.
Let me dig up that info. Okay so this isn't exactly what I did but it's pretty darn close.

Here is what I did.

sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and added at the end of the file.
blacklist wl
blacklist bcm43xx
